State Representative Mike Hoadley of Au Gres emphasized the introduction of two bills by the Michigan House, which is controlled by Republicans. These bills aim to address issues arising from a recent Michigan Supreme Court decision that affects local businesses and their employees.
House Bills 4001 and 4002, co-sponsored by Hoadley, are designed to counteract the court's decision from last summer. The ruling mandates changes like phasing out the tip credit and imposing stricter sick leave and wage regulations. Without legislative changes, these mandates will take effect on February 21, potentially forcing local businesses to lay off staff or shut down.
"As we promised employees and employers alike who were impacted by the court’s decision, HBs 4001 and 4002 open the conversation so we can start work on solving the problem," said Hoadley. He noted that many tipped workers and small business owners have opposed the ruling due to its potential impact on their livelihoods. "House Republicans took a stand and are now following through on the promise to make this a priority on Day One."
The proposed bills aim to preserve tipped wages while gradually increasing the minimum wage. They also seek to maintain current earned sick leave policies, ensuring that small businesses with limited staff aren't severely affected by unexpected absences.
Despite bipartisan support for reform, House Democrats did not address these issues in the previous term. Servers, bartenders, and small business owners have expressed concerns about how the court's ruling could harm their livelihoods. Hoadley stated that House Republicans are focusing on these voices as they begin a new term.
In addition, House Republicans announced a new committee: the Select Committee on Protecting Michigan Employees and Small Businesses. This committee will focus on addressing legislation related to tipped wages and earned sick time.
