Representative Bill G. Schuette presented a state tribute last Friday night to legendary Beaverton High School Basketball Coach Roy Johnston, who is retiring after 50 seasons with the school.

"Roy Johnston has instilled life-long skills and helped build self-confidence in thousands of youngsters who have grown to adulthood as capable and upstanding citizens. He is a positive and winning force in the community," Schuette said. "During his years, many changes have occurred in our society. Roy’s ability to meet the challenge and cope with a changing world requires not only skill, but a deep sense of emotional concern as well. We thank him for passing this legacy on to our rising generations, while expressing our appreciation and best wishes to a devoted and inspirational professional."

In 2022, Johnston received the National High School Basketball Coaches Association Wooden Legacy Award – named for legendary former UCLA men’s basketball coach John Wooden – which recognizes coaches for their service and excellence in building character and devotion to teaching others.

Schuette presented the tribute to Johnston on Friday, Feb. 23 during a home finale against Gladwin, which ended with one final win for Coach Johnston. Schuette represents the 95th House District, which includes Beaverton, Billings, and Tobacco townships in Gladwin County as well as all of Midland County.
