Sen. Ken Horn (R-Frankenmuth) recently lent his support to two pieces of legislation that would close the $2.2 billion gap in Michigan’s budget, while directing federal COVID-19 relief to help schools, universities and local governments.
The legislation, which Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed on Friday, makes up a portion of the deficit with $936 million in reduced spending reached through a combination of spending cuts and hiring freezes, according to MiSenateGOP.
The Legislature also dipped into the state’s rainy day fund to pull out $350 million to aid in covering the budget deficit.
Federal COVID-19 relief funds distributed under the bill will go toward schools ($555 million), universities and community colleges ($200 million) and local governments ($350 million).
“In addition to cutting back state funding, these bills use federal money to help schools offset costs associated with responding to the coronavirus, as well as help prepare teachers, parents and students for the future of education in our state,” Horn said, according to MiSenateGOP.
