State Representative Jerry Neyer has expressed support for a new plan passed by the Michigan House that would allow students to receive excused absences when attending agricultural events. These events include those organized by groups such as Future Farmers of America (FFA) and 4-H.

“These agricultural education events are some of the most formative, important experiences a student can have,” said Neyer, R-Shepherd. “These kids should never have to play hooky just to attend the FFA or 4-H conference. These organizations are pillars of the agricultural education community, and the learning experiences they provide our kids are just as quality as the material taught in our classrooms.”

Under this legislation, only students in good academic standing will be eligible for these excused absences, and only if the event is sponsored by an approved organization like FFA or 4-H. Local schools will retain authority to decide how many excused absences a student may take for these activities each school year.

The proposal will now move to the Senate for further review.
