This week in Tri-City history.

Born October 8, 1909, in Bay City

On October 8, 1909, a future NFL standout was born in Bay City, Michigan. He played college football at the University of Michigan, earning team MVP and All-Big Ten honors. He joined the Chicago Bears in 1932, contributing to their 1932 and 1933 NFL championships. Known for his aggressive play and refusal to wear a helmet until mandated, he earned six All-Pro selections. He later played for the Philadelphia Eagles and the wartime Steagles. Over nine seasons, he recorded 103 receptions, 1,638 yards, and 23 touchdowns. His jersey number 56 was retired by the Bears. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971. His legacy remains significant in Bay City's sports history.
