State Representative Timmy Beson has voted in favor of legislation aimed at protecting consumers from excessive ticket price hikes caused by automated bots. These bots are used to bypass ticket purchase limits set by venues and websites, allowing individuals and groups to buy large quantities of tickets and resell them at inflated prices.
The proposed legislation, known as House Bills 4262-63, seeks to ban the use of such bots. The bills have been informally referred to as the "Taylor Swift" bills due to the widespread issues with ticket bots during Swift's 2023-24 Eras Tour.
"As a state, we are blessed with tons of great entertainment," said Beson, representing Bay City. He emphasized that consumers often fall victim to schemes that exploit technology for profit, making it difficult for families to afford tickets. "These bills will help curtail that ridiculous practice while promoting fairness," he added.
If passed, the bills would empower the Michigan Department of Attorney General to take legal action against those using automated bots to circumvent online ticket purchasing limits. Violators could face civil fines up to $5,000 per fraudulently obtained ticket.
Similar legislation has been enacted in other states like Arizona and Maine. While federal law also restricts ticket bots, this state-level ban would enhance enforcement capabilities within Michigan.
House Bills 4262-63 will now proceed to the Senate for further consideration.
