State Representative Jerry Neyer has emphasized the substantial funding allocated to Central Michigan University (CMU) in the recently approved House Higher Education Budget. The budget, totaling $2.2 billion, includes a 26% increase in funding for CMU, amounting to an additional $25 million.

Neyer expressed his support for CMU, stating, "Michigan has some of the best colleges and universities in the country, and Central Michigan is at the top of that list." He criticized the Senate's approach to budgeting for higher education institutions, saying they had overlooked many Michigan graduates attending these universities. Neyer highlighted that while negotiations are ongoing, the House plan demonstrates a commitment to ensuring that all Michigan colleges and universities prioritizing local graduates receive necessary resources.

The budget aims to encourage high school graduates from Michigan to pursue their college education within the state. Under this plan, most of Michigan’s higher education institutions would see notable increases in funding.

In response to this development, Central Michigan University officials released a statement expressing gratitude: “Central Michigan University is committed to keeping higher education within reach for Michigan students and their families, and we appreciate the House’s proposed historic increase in investment in CMU’s mission.” They thanked Speaker Matt Hall, Chairwoman Ann Bollin, Sub-Committee Chair Greg Markkanen, and Representative Jerry Neyer for their efforts. As an institution classified as a Carnegie Opportunity University offering significant access and career outcomes for students, CMU looks forward to collaborating with other public universities in Michigan and state leaders on developing a budget that enhances access and affordability.
