State Representative Matthew Bierlein commended Michigan's efforts in a recent legal victory against the robocall industry. A court ruling permanently barred John Spiller, a notorious figure in the robocall sector, from continuing his operations. Spiller owned several robocall providers responsible for billions of calls across the nation, disregarding "Do Not Call" registries.
Bierlein expressed gratitude towards Attorney General Dana Nessel for her role in safeguarding consumers from illegal robocalls. He noted that this issue is a common concern among his constituents and emphasized its impact on vulnerable populations, including seniors in Michigan. “This decision shows that our state is going to be a leader in protecting residents, holding bad actors accountable and halting this abusive conduct,” he stated.
Previously restricted by a 2023 court order from making robocalls or engaging in marketing, Spiller continued his activities by forming new companies and using aliases. The recent court order prohibits him from establishing any telecommunications firms and bans collaboration with individuals involved in these violations. Additionally, Spiller must cease deceptive representations under aliases and pay over $600,000 in attorney’s fees and costs to the states involved in the lawsuit.
Bierlein represents Michigan's 97th House District, which includes parts of Bay, Genesee, Saginaw, and Tuscola counties.
