State Representative Mike Hoadley, a Republican from Au Gres, recently addressed the House Floor in support of a proposal that would allow high school students to dual enroll at trade schools for credit.
"For too long, college has been pushed as the ultimate option for a high school graduate," Hoadley stated during his speech. "To be clear, there is nothing wrong with a four-year degree. But the reality is, it's not for everyone. For those of us with grey hair, or no hair, there was a time when high school counselors told us that without a four-year degree, we would be nothing but ditch diggers. But the quiet part they failed to mention is that the heavy ditch digging equipment operator possesses technical skills that may earn him a six-figure salary."
The proposed legislation, House Bill 4154, seeks to amend the Postsecondary Enrollment Options Act by including trade schools as an option for dual enrollment. It specifically adds trade schools to the definition of eligible postsecondary institutions.
"Our workforce development needs to be more encompassing to include skilled trades," Hoadley emphasized. "By allowing high school students to enroll in trade schools under the Postsecondary Enrollment Options Act, we are opening doors to real, tangible opportunities. This legislation isn't just about education—it's about economic competitiveness and development."
The bill passed the House with strong bipartisan support in a 92-13 vote. Hoadley expressed hope that both the Senate and governor will also endorse it.
"I hope that we as elected officials can come together to support students in whatever career path they choose," he said. "This is about giving our next generation the tools they need to be successful in the workforce. I hope our colleagues in the Senate and the governor will follow our lead in supporting this."
