State Rep. Bill Schuette | Michigan House Republicans
Representative Bill G. Schuette, a Republican from Midland and chair of the House Select Committee on Protecting Michigan Employees and Small Businesses, expressed his approval following the Michigan Senate's decision to maintain the tip credit. This credit is considered an essential income source for many service industry workers.
Schuette stated, "I am pleased the Michigan Senate followed the lead of House Republicans and finally took action to protect the tips of restaurant workers throughout our state. This was an issue House Republicans prioritized from Day One."
While acknowledging this as a positive development, Schuette highlighted ongoing concerns regarding a sick time policy set to take effect on February 21. He warned that without legislative adjustments, small businesses might face staffing shortages and potential closures.
He further commented, "This is a positive step, but work remains to fix a disastrous sick time policy ahead of a Feb. 21 effective date. Without a legislative fix, many small businesses will be left understaffed, overwhelmed, and at risk of having to close their doors for good."
Schuette referenced last summer's ruling by the Michigan Supreme Court as problematic, citing feedback from workers and employers who fear negative impacts without legislative changes. He emphasized his commitment to advocating for these reforms: "Since the Michigan Supreme Court’s short-sighted ruling last summer, I have heard pushback from numerous workers and job providers about the devastation that would be caused without legislative intervention. I will continue to fight for them and serve as their voice so we can get these reforms to the finish line."
