State Representatives Timmy Beson, Matthew Bierlein, Tim Kelly, and Bill G. Schuette have urged Governor Gretchen Whitmer to initiate a special election for the 35th State Senate seat. This seat became vacant when Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet left her position. The legislators emphasized the importance of restoring constituent services promptly.

The representatives' statement was released following a joint letter from the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, Midland Business Alliance, and Saginaw County Chamber of Commerce also advocating for a special election.

"Every day that goes by without a special election being called is a day people across our area will be without constituent services they expect and deserve," said the representatives in their joint statement. They noted that while Michigan House members are dedicated to addressing constituents' questions and concerns, having multiple layers of representation is crucial for optimal taxpayer returns.

They further explained that "gaps in these layers put people at a disadvantage compared to other residents and communities." Although House members can assist with certain services, they lack voting power in the Senate or the ability to engage in Senate committee discussions on issues affecting daily life.

The statement highlighted the urgency of these times: "These are critical times in our state, and right now nearly 300,000 workers, small business owners, parents, teachers, first responders, local officials and others in this impacted area have less of a voice than they did before."

In conclusion, the representatives appealed directly to Governor Whitmer: "We call on Gov. Whitmer to immediately call for a special election and deliver clarity for hardworking people and their families across our communities."
