The majority of students in Bay County districts were white in the 2022-23 school year, according to the Michigan Department of Education.

Of the 12,814 students attending Bay County district schools, 80.7% were white. Hispanic students were the second largest ethnic group among Bay County's districts (9.5%).

In the previous school year, white students were still the most common group in Bay County, representing 80.9% of the student body.

Bay City School District and Essexville-Hampton Public Schools had the most diverse student body in the county, including African American, American Indian, Asian, Hawaiian, Hispanic, multiracial, and white.

In the 2022-23 school year, the total number of students enrolled in school districts in the county dropped 2.2% compared to the previous year.

The main offices of all districts mentioned in the story are located in cities associated with Bay County.

Overall student enrollment in Michigan remains below pre-pandemic levels, with white students experiencing the largest decline at 6.5%.
