Mrs. Welch's Math MVPs!

Mathtest1000

Bay City School District issued the following announcement on Mar 31.

Meet some of the recent "Math MVPs" of Mrs. Welch's 7th grade math class at Handy Middle School. We sat down with Kallie, Justyce, Addison, Alyssa, Paulino, and Jonathan (students pictured L to R in photo, along with Mrs. Salinas & Mrs. Welch) to learn more about what it means to be a Math MVP and how their coursework helps in everyday life.

"I got to be a Math MVP for being a good student in class - being helpful," said Jonathan.

Earning the monthly honor of Mrs. Welch's Math MVP isn't necessarily about getting the highest test scores - showing an eagerness to learn, a willingness to help others, and being an engaged student factor into the award.

"Our Math MVP students get the comfy MVP seat in front of class where they can help support others in learning," said Mrs. Welch. "They are selected based on work ethic, math performance, and a willingness to go above and beyond."

When asked their favorite math lessons, the MVPs were quick to highlight equations that many adults (this interviewer included) may have forgotten about: things like the rise over run formula or constant of proportionality. But when asked how their lessons impact daily life, nearly every hand went up with a response.

"It's helped me with measurements," said Paulino. "Things like cooking and baking."

"Math helps when you're shopping," said Justyce. "Figuring out percentages off and things like that."

"It also helps with other classes, especially science," said Addison.

Clearly, math matters. Congratulations to each of Mrs. Welch's Math MVPs!
