Dowagiac Area History Museum recently issued the following announcement.
The museum is getting back into programming! We worked with Southwestern Michigan College and we will co-host a Black History Month program, "Looking Back and Forward: Historic and Modern Issues Facing African Americans in Law Enforcement."
The program will be at SMC in the Theatre in the Dale A. Lyons Building on February 24 at 3 p.m. Three Dowagiac natives who went into Law Enforcement will lead the panel discussion-- Dennis Grady and Randy Pompey, Michigan State Police, retired; and Eric Payne, Grand Rapids Chief of Police, retired.
All were influenced by the legacy of Chief George Grady to enter Law Enforcement. George Grady was appointed by the City of Dowagiac as the first African American Chief of Police in the history of the State of Michigan in 1965.
