Bay City Department of Public Works issued the following announcement on Jan 19.

What’s the difference between Stage I and Stage IV Snow and Ice Control Operations?!? A LOT OF SNOW!

In WinterWISE this week – we’re sharing a little insight into how we respond to different levels of snow (and ice).

STAGE I

• Less than 3 inches of snow

• Priorities include bridges/approaches, state trunklines and hospital routes, major streets, school routes, residential stop sign intersections as needed, and public parking lots

• 4 to 6 underbody blade trucks on assigned routes

STAGE II

• 3 to 6 inches of snow

• Priorities shift to state trunklines, bridges/approaches, major streets, business districts, local streets/alleys (evaluated during the storm), intersection clearing as needed and snow hauling from business areas on the midnight shift

• Add additional types of plows and equipment (such as dump trucks and loaders)

STAGE III

• 6+ inches of snow

• If a Major Snow Event is declared – all parked cars MUST be removed from the street in ADVANCE to allow plows to properly do their job

• Priorities remain the same as Stage II

STAGE IV

• Blizzard conditions with drifting

• The City Manager may declare a State of Emergency limiting vehicular traffic to emergency vehicles only

By the way, throughout the winter we have a salt standby crew on alert. Our team members take turns being on-call so we can quickly get to work even during the overnight hours.
