Looking for a little adventure?

Cellphone apps

City of Bay City recently issued the following announcement.

Looking for a little adventure? Did you know the City of Bay City is home to several adventure labs? There were eight labs when this snippet for our #SundaySpotlight was written.

Right now you’re probably thinking something along the lines of, “what exactly is an adventure lab?” We’re glad you asked! If you’re familiar with geocaching you’ll have an idea of what to expect. Just like geocaching – you’re on the hunt for something and GPS is your best friend. The ‘prize’ is the cache – but there’s a lot of fun to be had on the journey. However, unlike geocaching, an adventure lab doesn’t require you to trek into the middle of the woods and search out a leaf-covered canister (although that’s fun too). Instead, an adventure lab can be something that’s in plain sight; something you’ve walked by several times and never given a second thought.

Yes, there’s an app for this! It’s called “Geocaching Adventure Labs” (free to download). Clues and GPS help you track down the points of interest. When you find each point – there’s a question to answer before you can successfully mark it as completed. The adventure labs can have anywhere from five to 10 points of interest.

Of course, before we told you about this fun way to explore Bay City – we had to try it out! A friend and I (hello, this is Marketing Specialist Rebecca Suhr) set out to explore ‘The Murals of Bay City’ in Downtown Bay City. Because I’m nice – I’ll show you a couple of the stops but you’ll have to find the others. I’ll tell you – one of them really stumped us! What we learned along the way was that it was great exercise, we saw things in a different light, and we learned a little bit about Bay City. This particular Adventure Lab is one that adults could enjoy – or even families. I have a five-year-old and he could have easily walked this route, FYI.

Now here’s the really cool part – after you complete two Adventure Labs put together by someone else – an Adventure Lab app user can apply to create their own Adventure Lab! If it was up to you – where would you create an adventure lab in the City of Bay City? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
