State Rep. Roger Hauck (R-Union Township) posted a statement on the Michigan House Republicans website.
Hauck said that he understood the measures promoting social distancing. But he wrote about the measures taking place in stores, limiting sales of goods such as flooring and carpeting, and the stores being required to block those sections off. He said that he hoped the executive order would open aspects of business back up, rather than create more restrictions.
He said there are consumer goods that improve lives that are not being permitted to be sold, while lotto tickets are still being sold across the state.
Hauck said, “The administration’s a la carte method of selection for what shutters and what stays open has derailed livelihoods, and there currently seems to be no plan to get them back on the tracks.”
According to the statement, “Nearly 385,000 workers in Michigan filed for unemployment between March 29 and April 4.”
As of April 30, the total number of Michiganders filing for unemployment is 1.26 million, according to MLive.
The "Stay at Home, Stay Safe" order is due to end May 15. Hauck proposed that Michigan residents “be ready to hit the ground running and develop measures to get people back to work when it does.”
Hauck expressed disappointment at the conflict between Gov. Whitmer’s order and new federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency guidelines. The latter allows more economic sectors to be considered essential businesses, such as landscaping and construction.
The representative emphasizes a need to balance the health of the economy with the health of the people.
