BAY 4-H CLUB: Five in Double Figures as Michigan State Beats Eastern Michigan, 101-48

Bay 4-H Club issued the following announcement on Dec. 26

Senior guard Cassius Winston (Detroit, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) scored 21 points and had seven assists to lead five players in double figures as No. 15 Michigan State opened up a 21-point halftime lead and cruised to a 101-48 win over Eastern Michigan on Saturday night at the Breslin Center.

Sophomore guard Foster Loyer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) scored 13 points, sophomore forward Aaron Henry (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) scored 12 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had six assists, junior forward Xavier Tillman (Grand Rapids, Mich./GR Christian) had 11 points and seven rebounds and sophomore forward Marcus Bingham Jr. (Grand Rapids, Mich./GR Catholic Central) added 10 points and six rebounds.

Michigan State won its fourth-straight game and the sixth in the last seven, improving to 9-3 overall, while Eastern Michigan falls to 9-2

 Summary

Michigan State controlled from the tip and had a 21-point lead at halftime, 41-20, and used a 15-4 run early in the second half to push it over 30 points, 60-28, on a layup from sophomore forward Thomas Kithier (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) at the 14:06 mark.

The Spartans held Eastern Michigan to just one field goal over a span of four-plus minutes and took a 70-30 lead on a dunk from Bingham Jr. with 12:39 to play.

MSU took its biggest lead, 84-34, on a free throw from freshman forward Julius Marble (Dallas, Texas/Dallas Jesuit) with 9:17 to play.

Michigan State's biggest lead was 57 points (101-44) on a jumper from redshirt sophomore guard Jack Hoiberg (Burr Ridge, Ill./Hinsdale Central).

The Spartans took a 41-20 lead at the break and had two players – Henry (10) and Winston (10) – in double figures as the Eagles struggled to find their shot.

MSU led 14-1 after a Winston 3-pointer at the 13:32 mark as EMU managed only one free throw and missed its first xx field goals.

A dunk from Marble gave MSU a 16-5 lead with 11:54 to play after Eastern hit its first field goal of the game, a layup from Yeikson Montero at the 12:14 mark.

The Spartans took their biggest lead of the half, 41-15, on a 3-pointer from Loyer with 2:38 to play in the half.

Michigan State connected on 54.2 percent of its field goals (32-of-59), including 50.0 percent of its 3-point field goals (15-of-30).

The Spartans handed out 27 assists on 32 field goals.

MSU held a 51-41 advantage in rebounding.

The Spartans scored 23 points off 15 EMU turnovers.

Notes

Michigan State scored at least 100 points for the second time this season.

It was the 52nd time in program in history that the Spartans have scored at least 100 points in a game (51-1).

It was the 22nd time MSU has scored at least 100 points under Head Coach Tom Izzo (21-1).

The Spartans connected on 54.2 percent of their field goals, the second-best mark this season.

This was the fourth time this season MSU connected on at least 50 percent of its field goals.

The Spartans hit a season-high 15 3-pointers and connected on a season-high 50.0 percent of their shots from behind the arc.

This was the third time this season Michigan State collected at least 50 rebounds.

The team's 27 assists were the second-most by the team this season.

Cassius Winston scored 21 points, leading MSU in scoring for the eighth time this season.

It was his seventh game this season with at least 20 points and the 30th game of his career.

He has scored in double figures 10 times this year and 80 times in his career.

Winston handed out seven assists, giving him 787 for his career and he trails Mateen Cleaves by 29 for the all-time lead at MSU.

Xavier Tillman has scored in double figures eight times this season and 28 times in his career.

Aaron Henry has scored in double figures six times this year and 10 times in his career.

Sophomore guard Foster Loyer scored a career-high 13 points

The Spartans shot 42.9 percent from 3-point land (9-of-21), the second-highest mark this season.
